Welcome from Neil Roberts, Director of Resources

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the role of Assistant Director Audit and Risk Assurance for the General Medical Council.

We are the independent regulator for doctors, physician associates (PAs), anaesthesia associates (AAs) in the UK. We work with all of these professions, patients and other stakeholders to support good, safe, compassionate patient care across the four countries of the UK. Our Corporate Strategy sets out our ambitions not just to perform our regulatory responsibilities with excellence, but to use our strength and influence to support wider improvement across the health and care system.

The current Assistant Director Audit and Risk Assurance is retiring, creating an opportunity to join us at an exciting time with an ambitious work programme to deliver. Working independently, as the most senior leader in the organisation for audit, risk and assurance, you will be playing a key role in supporting our regulatory remit and helping us prepare for major reform in the way we deliver statutory services which will change how we work across the whole business. To be successful we need to move at pace and with flexibility but have confidence in the mechanisms and systems we are developing. That’s where you come in! Using your relationship building skills alongside a professional understanding of risk and assurance, you will lead our audit and assurance programme of activity to support this ambitious agenda. Your work will provide support for and confidence to my executive colleagues, the Audit and Risk Committee and the GMC’s Council that the GMC is maximising the effectiveness and impact of its resources in managing both routine and change activities.

The GMC is an organisation that is constantly innovating and improving. Our people are our greatest asset and you will find a palpable passion from your colleagues and our Council for public service.  We provide an inclusive working environment where everyone is valued, and welcome new perspective and ideas that you may bring. We have placed equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of our Corporate Strategy, both as a regulator of an increasingly diverse medical profession and as an organisation. I am very keen for this appointment to be part of our commitment to improve the diversity of our senior leadership, so I would particularly encourage and welcome applications to this role from women, people with disabilities and from an ethnic minority background.

So, if you are professionally curious, motivated by working with inspiring colleagues, enjoy a collaborative working approach and value an inclusive working environment and you have a personal passion for audit, risk and assurance, I’d really welcome your application.

Neil Roberts, Director
