Welcome from Neil Roberts, Director of Resources
Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the role of Assistant Director-People for the General Medical Council.
We are the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. We work with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to support good, safe patient care across the four countries of the United Kingdom. Our 1,800 staff, our council and our associates are our biggest asset and enabling their continuous development will help us to most effectively deliver our work.
This is a really exciting time to join the GMC. The government’s regulatory reform agenda is a great opportunity for us to realise many of our ambitions. Our regulatory remit is expanding, which is the first step in a major legislative overhaul of the way we work and there is also pending change in our governance structure. We want to ensure that we adapt and innovate, to play our part in delivering better healthcare and patient protection. Delivering operational excellence while working under the scrutiny of the professions and public means the leadership task is a significant one.
Our people are our greatest asset and our environment is inclusive and caring, with wellbeing at the front and centre of our work. I am proud that our people have responded with pace, flexibility and compassion, to the unprecedented change we have successfully delivered as an organisation and also in relation to the global healthcare environment over the last few years. We will continue to invest in the development of our people and to ensure that they are empowered to lead within their roles and to speak up and learn within a reflective culture. Our workforce is not as diverse as it should be, particularly at a senior level, but we are taking steps to improve this, with a focus on fostering a culture of inclusive leadership, innovation and professionalism among colleagues at all levels.
As our Assistant Director- People, you will be the most senior HR professional in the GMC, with responsibility for providing a high level of leadership and strategic direction to the GMC’s People Services and providing professional HR advice to our CEO, Directors, our committees and Council. We are looking for an exceptional leader, someone who will champion our values and commitment to inclusion, who is able to lead and embed ongoing change, build and maintain outstanding relationships with key stakeholders, lead a high-performing, customer-focused team and make a valuable strategic contribution to the organisation.
Our staff say this is a great place to work. You will join an organisation with a compelling public mission, a reputation for excellence in its work, and a central position at the heart of the wider health and care system. You will find a strong collaborative culture and a supportive and welcoming group of colleagues.
