Welcome from Charlie Massey, GMC Chief Executive and Registrar

Welcome, and thank you for taking an interest in the critical role of Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards with us joining our senior management team.

This role leads the Education and Standards Directorate that is central to our work, influencing the future of medical education in the UK and delivering a challenging programme of regulatory work. You will represent the function across the GMC and with external partners and on public platforms. You will lead a Directorate of around 140 staff in total, ideally suited for someone already holding a senior clinical role who wants to take on a new major leadership role in the world of healthcare regulation.

You will also take on the important role of Medical Director providing strategic advice across the organisation and developing effective engagement with medical audiences. This includes becoming the RO for the GMC and also the Suitable Person (likely to become a Tier 4 RO) for the most senior medical leaders across the UK .

I have been with the GMC since 2016, having worked in a variety of roles across government and the wider public sector and I can say from experience that it is a great organisation to be part of. You will join an organisation with a compelling public mission, a deserved reputation for excellence in its work, and an acknowledged convening and leadership role at the heart of the wider health and care system. You will find a strong collaborative culture and a supportive and welcoming group of colleagues. We offer excellent benefits including a generous defined contribution pension scheme, and flexible working options.

We provide an inclusive working environment where everyone is valued, and welcome new perspectives and ideas that you may bring. We have placed equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of our work both as a regulator of an increasingly diverse medical profession and as an organisation. I am very keen for this appointment to be part of our commitment to improve the diversity of our senior management team, so I would particularly encourage and welcome applications to this role from women, people with disabilities and from an ethnic minority background.

As a part of the GMC, you’ll be able to make a real difference. If you feel that this is the right opportunity for you, I look forward to receiving your application.
